In a world where labels and judgments attempt to define us, there was a girl captured in a black and white picture. Look closely, beyond the image.
Did she exude confidence, security, and happiness?
Did she seem like she had it all figured out?
But don’t we all know that appearances can be deceiving?
We often rush to judge based on gender, age, or skin color.
And so, the girl in the picture, the one you see, was judged and labeled, bound by a society that wrote her off as nobody.
Why?
Simply because I was born into poverty, raised by a single, illiterate mother. She was told something she refused to accept… silently.
That was me.
As a young woman, new to a foreign land with no grasp of the English language or understanding of the culture, I was told to just do what most people do.
They said I should settle for marriage, relying on a future husband to care for me. They claimed that as a woman, my role was limited, my worth devalued.
At times, I smiled and spoke only a few words. What they didn’t know was that deep within me, a different intention was silently set long ago. I longed for freedom, my own freedom.
I never wanted to depend on a man or any one. I wanted to be independent. No, I wanted to earn my own money and to spend it as I pleased without seeking permission.
But let me tell you something about my family and I. Despite our dire circumstances, we clung to our humble roots and nurtured a flame of compassion within our hearts. We knew that dreams were not built overnight, but rather, one step at a time. And so, we walked on, seeking help and guidance along the way, fueled by an unyielding determination to make our dreams a reality.
And so, I defied the expectations placed upon me. I went on to college and sought financial security, vowing never to go hungry again. My dreams drove me forward in this land of freedom and opportunity.
The journey was far from easy, but we made it happen. And I know that your journey may have been even more challenging, yet you too have persevered.
Now, a new journey awaits. A different challenge, one that has been elusive for some time. Self-doubt has been the primary setback. But I know I am not alone on this path.
Perhaps you, too, yearn to take on this journey, but you hesitate, suppressed by insecurity.
I invite you to join me, to experience the taste of harmony. I don’t have a crystal-clear roadmap or all the answers to the obstacles you’ll encounter. But I can promise this: I will fight off those challenges. They shall pass.
Awaiting on the other side of those challenges are the moments of celebration, the sweet taste of harmony. I understand that you, like me, may be facing social judgments and preconceived notions.
Some may believe that those who are over 50, no longer have the capacity to make a difference. They are past their prime and should resign to a life of regret. But I challenge those standards and judgments.
I believe in the power of the human spirit, in the resilience and determination that reside within each one of us. I know that age, broken hearts, unfulfilling job, or societal expectations do not have to confine our lives.
I am here, not with a guarantee of absolute fulfillment or a perfectly achieved dream, but with the certainty that I will give it my all. I know that by giving my all, I will leave this world with no regrets, no “what ifs”, “buts” or unfulfilled aspirations.
